Through funding from the National Carers Organisation, we have developed an online e-learning resource aimed at parents and carers. SLCo Interactive has a suite of online modules designed to help you understand speech, language and communication needs, and how to support your child more effectively.

We understand that it can be stressful to discover your child isn’t talking or is struggling to communicate, and it can be challenging to know where to find information and access support.

It is important to address speech, language and communication problems as early as possible because many problems can be overcome with some help, however some can be life-long. There are things that you, as parents and carers, can do to support your child and yourself, to give your family the best outcomes.

Ensuring your child is getting the appropriate supports in nursery, school, or therapy can be difficult when you are still getting to know your child’s abilities yourself. This can be made more challenging if your child does not have a diagnosis yet, or has a diagnosis you don’t understand. Many parents and carers don’t know what their rights and the rights of their child are when it comes to healthcare and support. Upon finding out your child has a speech, language or communication problem, the role of advocate will often fall on you, which means it is important for you to feel supported and prepared throughout this.

SLCo offers support to parents and carers through helpful information and guidance, and signposting to other agencies which can help with more specific issues. Our parent groups can offer much needed peer support, access to local activities, and sources of practical help. However, we are still developing our local support across Scotland, so we developed our online resources in order to allow parents and carers to access helpful learning materials from anywhere in Scotland at a time that suits them.

Our key idea for our e-learning programme is to gather together a helpful array of information in a way that guides the student through learning and self-reflection. Parents and carers have the most critical roles in their children’s experiences, and have the potential to have a larger impact than therapists or teachers on the child’s communication journey.

SLCo Interactive allows you to go through our modules at your own pace, in a way that suits you. We are still developing resources for this e-learning experiences and would love to hear from you about what you think would help best – let us know through our contact page.

In the next 3 months, we are going to launch an online training module for people working with kids who have speech and language disorders. That could be nursery workers, teachers, childminders, or anyone else who doesn’t have specific training in speech and language disorders, but may encounter children with them in their day-to-day work. If you are interested in finding out when this is launched, please sign up to our newsletter for professionals, and we will let you know as soon as it is available.
