Speech Checklist

It is important for parents to monitor their child's speech sound development and be aware of any potential concerns. Here are some general speech sound checklists for different ages and stages:

Ages 2-3

  • By age 2, your child should be understood by familiar listeners most of the time. 

  • By age 3, others should understand your child's speech about 75% of the time. 

  • Common sounds your child should be using include p, b, m, n, t, d, k, and g.

Ages 4-6

  • By age 4, your child's speech should be understood by unfamiliar listeners most of the time. 

  • By age 5, others should understand your child's speech almost all of the time. 

  • Your child should be able to produce sounds such as f, v, s, z, l, and "th" sounds.

Ages 6-8

  • By age 6-8, your child's speech should be mostly clear and intelligible.. 

  • They should have mastered most speech sounds, including blends like "bl," "tr," and "st."
